Shanna Hamilton, PhD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Hamilton is an Assistant Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Arizona (Tucson).

She grew up in Wales and graduated from the Swansea with a BSc. in Biochemistry. Dr. Hamilton completed her PhD at Cardiff University in the lab of Dr. Alan Williams, focusing on the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2).

Moving to the US for postdoctoral studies, Dr. Hamilton received broad training in cardiovascular physiology, ion channel electrophysiology and molecular biology in the laboratory of Dr. Dmitry Terentyev.

Dr. Hamilton opened her laboratory at UA in 2023.

Sage Quiggle, BS

Laboratory Manager (2023 – Present)

Sage joined with a BS in Biology and prior laboratory management experience from the University of Reno.

Brett Torrel, MS

Research Technician (2024 – Present)

Brett graduated from the Hamilton laboratory with a MS in Molecular Medicine in 2025, before returning as a technician while applying for medical school.

Undergraduate Students

Cole Bauer

Undergraduate Researcher (2025 – Present)

Cole is a current UA Physiology undergraduate. He recently received an American Heart Association summer fellowship for his work in the Hamilton laboratory.

M. Sunisha Sunil

Undergraduate Researcher (2025 – Present)

Sunisha is a current UA Molecular & Cellular Biology undergraduate. She joined the Hamilton laboratory having worked in a UA-Phoenix laboratory as a KEYS high school student.
